Fire Extinguisher Inspection in NJ

Fire extinguishers sit on a wall for years, and the day one is needed is the day you find out whether anyone looked after it. The national standard for portable extinguishers, NFPA 10, spells out how that care is divided. This page walks through it in plain terms for New Jersey businesses. For the services themselves, see our main fire extinguisher inspection and service page.
NFPA 10 in short
NFPA 10 sets two basic layers of attention. The first is a monthly visual check by the owner or occupant. The second is annual maintenance by a certified technician. New Jersey's fire code adopts NFPA 10, and your local fire official enforces it, so that is the standard an inspector will measure your extinguishers against.
The monthly check you can do yourself
A monthly check takes a minute per unit and needs no tools. Walk the building and confirm for each extinguisher:
- It is in its designated spot and has not been moved or blocked.
- The pressure gauge needle is in the operable (green) range, on units that have a gauge.
- The safety pin and tamper seal are in place.
- The label is readable and the hose, nozzle, and body show no damage, corrosion, or leaks.
- The inspection tag is attached and current.
If anything looks wrong, do not wait for the annual visit. Call us and we will look at it.
Annual maintenance by a certified technician
Once a year each extinguisher needs a thorough check by a certified technician. That is a closer examination than a visual walk-through: mechanical parts, the extinguishing agent, and the expellant are checked, and the unit is serviced as needed. Units that pass get a new tag. Units that do not are recharged, repaired, or replaced.
New Jersey servicing requirements
In New Jersey, a firm that services extinguishers must hold an NJ Division of Fire Safety certification or permit. Atlantic Fire Protection's permit number is P01507. Atlantic is also licensed in Pennsylvania. When you hire anyone to service your extinguishers, ask to see their credentials before they take a unit off the wall.
Six-year maintenance and hydrostatic testing
Some work only comes around every few years, and it depends on the type of extinguisher:
- Stored-pressure dry chemical units (the common ABC extinguisher) need internal maintenance every 6 years and a hydrostatic test every 12 years.
- Water, CO2, and wet chemical (Class K) extinguishers have a 5-year hydrostatic test interval.
A hydrostatic test pressure-tests the cylinder itself to confirm it can still hold its rated pressure safely. It is separate from the annual inspection. For more on that test, read our post on fire extinguisher hydrostatic testing.
The inspection tag
The tag on the extinguisher is the record a fire official sees first. It shows that a certified technician serviced the unit and when. Keep the tag attached and readable. If it is missing, torn, or out of date, the unit is treated as not inspected, whatever shape it is actually in.
Placement and access
An extinguisher that cannot be found or reached in a hurry does not help anyone. The basics are simple:
- Mount the extinguisher on a wall bracket or in a cabinet rather than leaving it on the floor.
- Keep it visible. Do not hide it behind a door, a shelf, or stacked stock.
- Keep the path to it unobstructed, so a person can reach it without climbing over anything.

Frequently asked questions
Who can inspect fire extinguishers in New Jersey?
Annual maintenance has to be done by a servicing firm that holds the required certification or permit from the NJ Division of Fire Safety. Atlantic Fire Protection's NJ Division of Fire Safety permit number is P01507.
Can I do the monthly check myself?
Yes. The monthly visual check is meant for the owner or occupant. The annual maintenance is the technician's job.
Do you service extinguishers at your office?
Yes. Bring them to our Toms River office during office hours, or we can come to your business.
What does the tag tell me?
It shows that a certified technician serviced the unit and when. A missing or out-of-date tag is one of the first things a fire official notices.
