What a commercial extinguisher inspection includes
Schedule an on-site fire extinguisher inspection and tagging, along with recharging, Class K service, or hydrostatic testing when needed. We check each extinguisher for pressure, gauge condition, hose and nozzle, pin and seal, bracket or cabinet, legible label, and obvious damage or corrosion. Units that pass get a new inspection tag. You get a service record for every extinguisher we inspect.
NFPA 10 is the standard most jurisdictions follow for portable fire extinguishers. It calls for a quick visual check about once a month and annual maintenance by a qualified technician. Some towns require more, and we keep your extinguishers on the schedule that applies.
How on-site service works
Tell us your location, approximately how many extinguishers you have, and any inspection concerns. We schedule a visit and identify what each unit needs. When an extinguisher requires additional service, we can exchange it for a serviced replacement or provide a loaner while your unit is serviced at our shop.
Common reasons extinguishers fail inspection
Low or overcharged pressure. A missing or broken pin or seal. A clogged hose or nozzle. Corrosion, dents, or a damaged valve. An extinguisher blocked by stock or furniture. A cabinet that will not open. An outdated or unreadable label. A unit past its hydrostatic or internal-maintenance date. A disposable extinguisher that has reached the end of its service life. If something fails, we fix it or replace the extinguisher.
Tags and records
After annual maintenance, each extinguisher that passes gets a new tag with the service date. Keep the records with your other life-safety paperwork. Property managers with several sites can get one visit schedule and separate records for each address.
Recharge, internal maintenance, and hydrostatic testing
A recharge or refill puts the extinguisher back in service after use or after a loss of pressure. Stored-pressure dry chemical extinguishers also need periodic internal maintenance under NFPA 10. Hydrostatic testing checks the cylinder itself on the schedule NFPA 10 sets for that type. We identify the type on site. When recharge, internal maintenance, or hydrostatic testing is due, we arrange that service with exchange or loaner options so your business stays equipped. When a unit is damaged, obsolete, or not worth repairing, we replace it.
Use the rating that matches the hazard
Different fires need different extinguishers. Here are the types we service and sell. If you can read the label, tell us the class when you call. If the label is worn off, we identify it on site.
Class K
Wet chemical for cooking oil and grease. The standard choice for restaurant kitchens and food trucks.
ABC dry chemical
Ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids, and energized electrical equipment. The common commercial extinguisher.
Water
Ordinary combustibles such as paper, wood, and cloth. Not for grease and not for live electrical equipment.
CO2
Flammable liquids and energized electrical equipment. It leaves no powder behind.
Halotron
A clean agent for flammable liquids and energized electrical equipment, where powder would ruin electronics or machinery.
Class D
Combustible metals, and only for the metal it is rated for. Not a substitute for ABC or Class K.
Restaurants, commercial properties, and multi-site accounts
Restaurants and commercial kitchens need Class K wet chemical coverage for cooking oil and grease, plus the ABC or other units in the dining room, hallway, and utility spaces. We sell and replace Class K extinguishers and service the ones already in the kitchen or on a food truck. Office buildings, apartments, warehouses, and retail stores usually need the right mix of ABC, CO2, or clean-agent units for the hazards in each area. If you manage more than one property in New Jersey or Eastern Pennsylvania, we can inspect and service extinguishers across those sites on a repeating schedule.
