The Morristown Green and South Street

Morristown’s dining is centered on the Green and along South Street, one of the busiest restaurant rows in North Jersey, with steakhouses, bistros, bars, and casual counters close together. Many of these kitchens sit in older buildings with basements and upper floors, so the suppression cabinet, the gas shutoff, and the extinguishers are not always where a new manager expects. Restaurants that host private events upstairs or downstairs need exit signs and emergency lights on those levels too, not only in the main dining room.

Dover and Blackwell Street

Dover’s downtown runs along Blackwell Street and is home to many Latin American restaurants and bakeries alongside shops and services. Bakeries with large ovens and restaurants with fryers and flat-top grills each need a suppression system matched to the equipment under the hood, plus a Class K extinguisher in reach of the fryers. Storefronts that change tenants often deserve a fresh look at the extinguishers on the wall and the exit lights over the door.

Around the county we also work in Parsippany, Morris Plains, Madison, Chatham, Denville, Rockaway, Randolph, Roxbury, Mount Olive, and Boonton. Office parks and medical buildings off Interstates 80 and 287 usually need extinguishers and emergency lighting more than suppression. Our Passaic County page covers the county to the east.

What a visit covers

Extinguishers that fail inspection can be recharged or refilled when that is all they need; otherwise we replace them.

Opening a new commercial kitchen? We also install and replace kitchen hood suppression systems for new commercial kitchens.

Codes the fire official will have in mind

Extinguishers are measured against NFPA 10, which asks for a monthly look by the owner and a yearly service by a qualified technician. Kitchen wet chemical systems fall under NFPA 17A and get inspected twice a year. Emergency lighting is tested under NFPA 101, section 7.9.3: 30 seconds each month and 90 minutes each year, logged in writing. Our guides to fire extinguisher inspection in NJ and emergency and exit light testing in NJ walk through each one.

Who inspects in Morristown and Dover

Morristown’s town code establishes the Fire Prevention Bureau of the Morristown Fire Bureau as the local enforcing agency for the Uniform Fire Code, under the Fire Marshal. In Dover, the town code names the Bureau of Fire Prevention in the Dover Fire Department as the local enforcing agency. The Morris County Fire Marshal enforces the code in county-owned buildings and assists local agencies, but your business answers to your own town’s fire official. Not sure which office covers you? Ask your municipality, and see fire extinguisher inspection in NJ for what the yearly visit involves.

  • Someone on site who can open the kitchen, storage areas, and mechanical rooms.
