Emergency light and exit sign inspection and testing
During an inspection, we check that each emergency light and exit sign works, look at its condition, and test battery-backup performance where the fixture has one. We document the results so you have a record for your files and for your fire inspector.
Emergency lights and exit signs come in different configurations. We check operation and condition, including battery-backup performance where applicable.
How often emergency lighting is tested
Fire codes generally require regular function tests and written records. New Jersey fire-prevention guidance citing the Uniform Fire Code commonly calls for required emergency lighting, including exit signs, to be tested for at least 30 seconds every month and for at least one hour once a year, with the equipment keeping working for the full test. Some codes and installations require a 90-minute annual test, including NFPA 101 for battery-powered emergency lighting. The applicable code, equipment, and building requirements determine the testing method and duration. In Pennsylvania, requirements vary by building and municipality. We follow applicable requirements for your building and confirm any questions with the local fire official.
Batteries and repairs
Many emergency lights and exit signs depend on a backup battery to stay lit when normal power fails. We replace batteries in units with battery backup. We also repair dark exit signs and emergency lights that fail testing or do not stay lit for the full test, including replacing lamps where the fixture uses them. That includes items your fire inspector has written up.
Fixture replacement
Depending on what the inspection finds, failed equipment may need a new battery, a repair, or a replacement fixture. When a battery or repair will not get a unit working properly, we replace the fixture. We'll explain what each failed unit needs.
