Bergen County is New Jersey’s most populous county, and its 70 or so municipalities each run their own business districts. Atlantic Fire Protection serves the county from the Toms River office and holds NJ Division of Fire Safety permit P01507. We have been in business since 2016. Broad Avenue, Main Street, and the county’s kitchens

Broad Avenue in Palisades Park is the center of the county’s Koreatown and a dense strip of Korean barbecue restaurants, bakeries, and late-night spots. Many of those kitchens use tabletop or built-in grills on the dining floor as well as a back-of-house cooking line, so the extinguisher placement and the suppression layout both deserve a close look. In Fort Lee, Main Street is a different mix: Italian, seafood, and pizza kitchens in storefronts close to the bridge approaches. Each type of kitchen has its own fire risks, but each needs the same three things: tagged extinguishers, a suppression system inspected twice a year, and working exit lights.

Hackensack, Paramus, and the office and retail towns

Hackensack is the county seat, with courts, offices, and restaurants within a few blocks of each other. Paramus is a retail center with large stores, shopping centers, and food courts, where the question is often how many extinguishers and exit signs a big floor plan really holds. We also work in Teaneck, Englewood, Ridgewood, Fair Lawn, Mahwah, Lyndhurst, Rutherford, Fort Lee, and Cliffside Park. Our Middlesex County page covers the county to the south.

What a visit covers

Extinguishers that fail inspection can be recharged or refilled when that is all they need; otherwise we replace them.

Opening a new commercial kitchen? We also install and replace kitchen hood suppression systems for new commercial kitchens.

Codes the fire official will have in mind

Extinguishers are measured against NFPA 10, which asks for a monthly look by the owner and a yearly service by a qualified technician. Kitchen wet chemical systems fall under NFPA 17A and get inspected twice a year. Emergency lighting is tested under NFPA 101, section 7.9.3: 30 seconds each month and 90 minutes each year, logged in writing. Our guides to fire extinguisher inspection in NJ and emergency and exit light testing in NJ walk through each one.

Who inspects in Bergen County

The state’s registry of local enforcing agencies lists a Bergen County Fire Marshal as the county enforcing agency, responsible for county property rather than for every municipality. Day to day, inspections of local businesses come from the town’s own fire official. In the state registry, Hackensack, Fort Lee, and Palisades Park each list their fire department as the enforcing agency, while Paramus is listed under the borough. Ask your town which office applies to your address, and read fire extinguisher inspection in NJ for what the yearly visit involves.

What to have ready

  • The address and a rough count of your extinguishers, emergency lights, and exit signs.
  • Your latest service tags or reports, if you have them.
  • Any notice or write-up from your fire official.
  • For a kitchen: the name on the suppression cabinet, if you know it, and the cooking equipment under the hood.
  • For a shopping center or multi-tenant building: which suites or units are included in the visit.
  • Someone on site who can open the kitchen, storage areas, and mechanical rooms.

Requesting a visit

Send the request form with your address, or phone Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm; the office is closed weekends. We schedule the trip, inspect, tag what passes, and recommend next steps, and you decide what to approve. Questions about a notice from your town’s fire official are welcome before you book. Mobile food businesses should read food truck fire protection. Pennsylvania calls use (484) 214-1800. Return to Service Areas.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover all of Bergen County?

Yes. We serve all of New Jersey, which includes every Bergen County town. Call to confirm your address.

Does my Palisades Park or Fort Lee restaurant need anything special?

If you grill, fry, or saute in commercial quantities, the cooking equipment needs a wet chemical system and a Class K extinguisher. We inspect and service both, and we check that exit signs and emergency lights work.

How often does my suppression system need service?

NFPA 17A calls for wet chemical systems to be inspected and serviced twice a year. Your town’s fire official can tell you about any additional requirements.

What if my town’s fire official sent me a violation notice?

Send us the notice with your request. We will plan the visit around the items listed.
