Hydrostatic testing is a pressure test of the extinguisher cylinder itself. It is separate from the annual inspection, it comes around on a longer schedule, and it is the one that tells you whether the shell can still be trusted. This page explains what the test is, when it is due, and what happens to a cylinder that fails. Atlantic Fire Protection arranges hydrostatic testing for business fire extinguishers in New Jersey. For the full service, see fire extinguisher inspection and service.

What hydrostatic testing is

An extinguisher works by pressure pushing the agent out. A weakened cylinder can fail under that pressure, which is dangerous for the person holding it. In a hydrostatic test the extinguisher is emptied and examined inside and out. It is then filled with water, which is pressurized to a test pressure above the extinguisher's normal operating pressure. The cylinder is checked for leaks, swelling, and other signs of failure.

How often hydrostatic testing is due

The interval depends on the type of extinguisher under NFPA 10:

  • Stored-pressure dry chemical extinguishers (the common ABC unit) are due every 12 years.
  • Water, CO2, and wet chemical (Class K) extinguishers are due every 5 years.

Other types follow their own schedules. We identify the type on site and tell you which dates apply. OSHA's portable fire extinguisher rule, 29 CFR 1910.157(f), also covers hydrostatic testing, including who may do it and removing a failed unit from service.

Hydrostatic testing is not the annual inspection

A yearly inspection is a check of the outside of the unit, its gauge, pin, seal, hose, and tag. It does not pressure-test the cylinder. A shell can look normal and still be weak. For stored-pressure dry chemical units there is also internal maintenance every six years, which comes well before the 12-year hydro test and is a different service. The schedule in plain terms is on our fire extinguisher inspection in NJ page.

What happens if a cylinder fails

A cylinder that fails the test is removed from service and replaced. It is not repaired and put back into use. This is different from an ordinary service problem such as a worn valve or hose, which can be repaired.

What happens if it passes

A cylinder that passes, with no problems found in the inside and outside examination, is dried and put back in service. Because the test empties the unit, it is recharged before it goes back.

Which extinguishers are due

Look at the service tags and at the cylinder for the date of the last test. If you cannot find it, or the unit is old and the records are gone, we can identify the type and age on site. Disposable extinguishers that cannot be recharged are not hydrostatically tested. They are replaced when they reach the end of their service life. Our post on fire extinguisher lifespan covers when that is.

Keeping your business equipped during testing

An extinguisher that is out for testing is an empty bracket. When a unit is due for hydrostatic testing or internal maintenance, we can exchange it for a serviced replacement or provide a loaner while yours is serviced at our shop.

New Jersey requirements

In New Jersey, a firm that services extinguishers must hold an NJ Division of Fire Safety certification or permit. Atlantic Fire Protection's permit number is P01507, and we are New Jersey licensed. Hydrostatic testing should only be done by trained people using suitable testing equipment, so ask any company to show credentials before a unit leaves your building. More background is in our post why hydrostatic testing is a must for your fire extinguishers.

What to have ready

Frequently asked questions

What is fire extinguisher hydrostatic testing?

A pressure test of the empty cylinder. The unit is examined inside and out, filled with water, and pressurized above its normal operating pressure to check for leaks, swelling, and other signs of failure.

How often is a fire extinguisher hydrostatic test due?

It depends on the type under NFPA 10. Stored-pressure dry chemical units are due every 12 years. Water, CO2, and wet chemical (Class K) extinguishers are due every 5 years.

Is hydrostatic testing the same as the annual inspection?

No. The annual inspection does not pressure-test the cylinder. Hydrostatic testing is a separate service on its own, longer schedule.

Is it the same as 6-year maintenance?

No. Stored-pressure dry chemical extinguishers need internal maintenance every 6 years, which is a different service from the hydrostatic test.

What happens if the cylinder fails?

It is removed from service and replaced. A failed cylinder is not repaired and put back into use.

Can I get a replacement or loaner while mine is tested?

Yes. We can exchange a unit for a serviced replacement or provide a loaner while yours is serviced at our shop.

Do disposable extinguishers need hydrostatic testing?

No. Disposable units that cannot be recharged are replaced at the end of their service life instead.
