Jersey City and Hoboken sit side by side on the Hudson River, and both are crowded with restaurants, bars, offices, and mixed-use buildings. Atlantic Fire Protection serves them from the Toms River office and holds NJ Division of Fire Safety permit P01507. We have been in business since 2016. For Hudson County, call the New Jersey number, (732) 443-0608.
Grove Street, Newark Avenue, and Washington Street
In downtown Jersey City, Grove Street and the Newark Avenue pedestrian plaza are lined with restaurants and bars, many in ground-floor spaces of larger buildings. Across the border in Hoboken, Washington Street has one of the densest runs of eateries in the state. These kitchens are compact, often with a single cooking line tucked under a hood in a narrow space and a basement or rear storage area. Compact does not mean simple: the suppression system still needs its inspection every six months, extinguishers need current tags, and the stairs and exits need working lights and signs.
Mixed-use buildings and the rest of Hudson County
A building with a restaurant on the ground floor and apartments or offices above often has shared exits and emergency lighting that serve every tenant. Ask the building manager who handles which equipment, so nothing falls between the restaurant and the landlord. Beyond the two cities we work in Union City, West New York, Weehawken, North Bergen, Secaucus, Bayonne, Kearny, and Harrison. Our Newark page covers the Essex County side of the Passaic.
What a visit covers
- Fire extinguisher inspection and tagging, with service and replacement when a unit fails.
- Ansul kitchen suppression inspection and service over commercial cooking lines.
- Emergency light and exit sign testing, with battery and fixture replacement.
Extinguishers that fail inspection can be recharged or refilled when that is all they need; otherwise we replace them.
Opening a new commercial kitchen? We also install and replace kitchen hood suppression systems for new commercial kitchens.
Codes the fire official will have in mind
Extinguishers are measured against NFPA 10, which asks for a monthly look by the owner and a yearly service by a qualified technician. Kitchen wet chemical systems fall under NFPA 17A and get inspected twice a year. Emergency lighting is tested under NFPA 101, section 7.9.3: 30 seconds each month and 90 minutes each year, logged in writing. Our guides to fire extinguisher inspection in NJ and emergency and exit light testing in NJ walk through each one.
Two cities, two fire departments
Jersey City and Hoboken each have their own fire department that enforces the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code, and Jersey City’s Fire Prevention Bureau handles routine inspections of properties and businesses. Because each city runs its own schedule, the date of your inspection depends on which side of the line your building sits. Ask your city’s fire prevention office when yours is due, and see emergency and exit light testing in NJ for the testing log that inspectors look for.
What to have ready
- The address and a rough count of your extinguishers, emergency lights, and exit signs.
- Your latest service tags or reports, if you have them.
- Any notice or write-up from your fire official.
- For a kitchen: the name on the suppression cabinet, if you know it, and the cooking equipment under the hood.
- For a building with several tenants: which suites, floors, and shared stairwells are included in the visit.
- Someone on site who can open the kitchen, storage areas, and mechanical rooms.
Requesting a visit
Send the request form with your address, or phone Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm; the office is closed weekends. We schedule the trip, inspect, tag what passes, and recommend next steps, and you decide what to approve. Questions about a fire official’s notice are welcome before you book. Mobile food businesses should read food truck fire protection. Pennsylvania calls use (484) 214-1800. Return to Service Areas.
