The Ironbound and Ferry Street
The Ironbound, in Newark’s East Ward, is known for Portuguese, Brazilian, and Spanish restaurants, and Ferry Street is where many of them sit. These are working kitchens: grills, fryers, and charbroilers that run hard through lunch and dinner, often in older buildings with tight back-of-house space. A suppression system over that cooking line needs its twice-yearly inspection, and a Class K extinguisher should be within reach of the fryers. Dining rooms and bars on the same block need clearly marked exits and lights that come on when the power fails.
Downtown, the neighborhoods, and Essex County
Around Broad Street and Market Street the mix changes to offices, storefronts, and small food counters, then to warehouses and light industrial buildings toward the airport and port side. Past Newark we work in East Orange, Orange, Irvington, Bloomfield, Belleville, Nutley, Montclair, West Orange, Maplewood, Livingston, and Millburn. A multi-floor building may carry dozens of extinguishers and exit signs, so a headcount before the visit saves time. Our Jersey City and Hoboken page covers Hudson County across the river.
What a visit covers
- Fire extinguisher inspection and tagging, with service and replacement when a unit fails.
- Ansul kitchen suppression inspection and service over commercial cooking lines.
- Emergency light and exit sign testing, with battery and fixture replacement.
Extinguishers that fail inspection can be recharged or refilled when that is all they need; otherwise we replace them.
Opening a new commercial kitchen? We also install and replace kitchen hood suppression systems for new commercial kitchens.
Codes the fire official will have in mind
Extinguishers are measured against NFPA 10, which asks for a monthly look by the owner and a yearly service by a qualified technician. Kitchen wet chemical systems fall under NFPA 17A and get inspected twice a year. Emergency lighting is tested under NFPA 101, section 7.9.3: 30 seconds each month and 90 minutes each year, logged in writing. Our guides to fire extinguisher inspection in NJ and emergency and exit light testing in NJ walk through each one.
Who inspects in Newark
The City of Newark’s code names the Bureau of Fire Prevention and Fire Safety Inspection in the Division of Fire as the local enforcing agency for fire safety. It carries out the periodic Uniform Fire Code inspections of life hazard uses on behalf of the state. Other Essex County towns have their own fire officials, so check with the office for your address. Learn what the yearly visit involves in fire extinguisher inspection in NJ.
