South Paterson and Main Street
The stretch of Main Street in South Paterson is known for its Middle Eastern restaurants, bakeries, grocers, and hookah lounges, and parts of it are often called Little Ramallah. Kitchens here run vertical rotisseries, charcoal and gas grills, and deep fryers for falafel, and many bakeries keep large ovens going from early morning. Grills and fryers under a hood need a wet chemical system inspected twice a year and a Class K extinguisher close by. Older mixed-use buildings along the street also need their exit signs and emergency lights checked, since dining rooms and upstairs spaces often share one path out.
Clifton’s Main Avenue and Wayne’s Route 23
In Clifton, the Main Avenue corridor, including the Botany Village section, is lined with small family restaurants, pizzerias, delis, and storefront shops, many in buildings that have changed hands and uses over the years. A tenant who takes over a former retail space and adds a cooking line should plan for the hood and suppression system before the first inspection. Wayne is a different picture: Route 23, along with the area around Willowbrook Mall near Routes 23 and 46 and Interstate 80, brings chain restaurants, big-box stores, offices, and strip centers. Large floor plans mean many extinguishers and exit signs, so a count before the visit helps us plan.
We also work in Passaic, Little Falls, Totowa, Woodland Park, Haledon, Hawthorne, Pompton Lakes, and West Milford. Our Bergen County page covers the county to the east.
What a visit covers
- Fire extinguisher inspection and tagging, with service and replacement when a unit fails.
- Ansul kitchen suppression inspection and service over commercial cooking lines.
- Emergency light and exit sign testing, with battery and fixture replacement.
Extinguishers that fail inspection can be recharged or refilled when that is all they need; otherwise we replace them.
Opening a new commercial kitchen? We also install and replace kitchen hood suppression systems for new commercial kitchens.
Codes the fire official will have in mind
Extinguishers are measured against NFPA 10, which asks for a monthly look by the owner and a yearly service by a qualified technician. Kitchen wet chemical systems fall under NFPA 17A and get inspected twice a year. Emergency lighting is tested under NFPA 101, section 7.9.3: 30 seconds each month and 90 minutes each year, logged in writing. Our guides to fire extinguisher inspection in NJ and emergency and exit light testing in NJ walk through each one.
Who inspects in Paterson, Clifton, and Wayne
In Paterson, the city code names the Bureau of Fire Prevention in the Fire Division as the local enforcing agency, and it carries out the state’s periodic inspections of life hazard uses. Clifton’s code makes the Bureau of Fire Prevention of the Clifton Fire Department the local enforcing agency. Wayne’s township code names the Wayne Township Fire Bureau, also called the Fire Inspection Bureau, as the local enforcing agency. Other towns in the county have their own fire officials, and some share one through agreements with a neighbor, so ask your municipality which office covers your address. Read fire extinguisher inspection in NJ for what the yearly visit involves.

Yes. We serve all of New Jersey, which includes Paterson, Clifton, Wayne, and every other Passaic County town. Call to confirm your address.
My kitchen runs a shawarma rotisserie and a charcoal grill. What do I need?

How often does my suppression system need service?
NFPA 17A calls for wet chemical systems to be inspected and serviced twice a year. Your town’s fire bureau can tell you about any additional requirements.
